Understanding your GEO Score

How ViaMetric calculates your Generative Engine Optimization score and how to improve it.

The GEO Score is a proprietary metric that evaluates how "readable" and "trustworthy" your website appears to AI crawlers like GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended.

Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on keywords, GEO focuses on structure, facts, and authority.

How it is calculated

Our tracking script runs a lightweight scan (scanSEO) on every page view to check for these critical signals:

1. JSON-LD Schema (Critical)

AI models rely heavily on structured data to "understand" a page without guessing.

  • What we check: Presence of <script type="application/ld+json">.
  • Why it matters: Schema tells the AI "This is a Product", "This is a Price", or "This is a FAQ". Without it, you are just unstructured text.

2. Heading Hierarchy

LLMs read your content like an outline. If your structure is broken, the AI gets confused.

  • Good: H1 -> H2 -> H3.
  • Bad: H1 -> H4 (Skipping levels) or Multiple H1s.
  • Impact: A clean hierarchy helps the AI summarize your key points accurately.

3. Outbound Authority Links

AI models use citations to verify facts. Linking to high-authority domains creates a "Trust Cluster".

  • What we check: Links to trusted domains like .gov, .edu, wikipedia.org, github.com, nytimes.com, etc.
  • Why it matters: It signals that your content is well-researched and grounded in verified data.

4. Semantic HTML Tags

  • Meta Description: Is it present? This is often used as the "summary" node in RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) systems.
  • OG Tags: OpenGraph tags provide the visual context for chat citations.

Improving your Score

ComponentWeightFix
JSON-LDHighAdd schema.org markup (FAQ, Article, SoftwareApp).

MetadataLowEnsure every page has a unique Title and Description.

Why "100/100" matters

A perfect GEO score doesn't guarantee you will rank #1 in ChatGPT, but it ensures that IF an AI references you, it understands your content correctly. It removes the "technical friction" preventing citations.
